Fjorgyn – Plastic Era as an Indicator of the Anthropocene

Posted on ()

This is a transdisciplinary, research-based project navigating between Sculpture, Performance and Photography.

The Wearable Sculpture Fjorgyn is an enquiry into the body, body gestures and the immediate space around us. Through body distortions and body extensions, this piece explores the relationship between humans, non-compostable rubbish and the earth. Along this project, Fjorgyn is placed in the idyllic landscapes of the South Downs and into the woods of this National Park as Pop Up Art Exhibitions. These artistic photographic sessions are in conversation with research photographs executed while ‘Walking as a Photographic Research Practice’ demonstrating the accumulation of non-compostable waste in the earth and its mixture with nature.

The materiality of this body of work is essential for its development and understanding, as it executes a relationship between the concept and photographic physicality. This project is conceptually based on plastic use and the photographic processes explore this idea by shooting a Sellotape garment-sculpture on film and then printing it onto plastic-coated paper.
